Frankincense. The King Of Oils.
Frankincense has become a big part of my daily natural health routine. Every morning I put 2 drops of this precious essential oil under my tongue. Why on earth do I hear you say? Read on my darling friends.
Frankincense is an ancient and most cherished gift from Mother Earth sitting confidently at the top of the list for anti-inflammatory properties. Frankincense essential oil comes from the sap of the Boswellia tree. When the tree is wounded it releases a sap to help heal it’s own wound. The sap dries to a resin like consistency which is then distilled. The end result is this sacred essential oil that we can benefit from in the same way as the tree itself does.
Another powerful fact is that Frankincense can cross the blood brain barrier. Yes. Frankincense is something completely natural that can support our brain function. ‘No side effects’. Frankincense has the molecular make up which includes sesquiterpenes. These sesquiterpenes can cross the blood brain barrier and offer physical and emotional support. Simply using this oil aromatically can have these benefits. Hence why I use this essential oil every single day.
As if it wasn’t enough that Frankincense benefits our beautiful brains there is more incredible goodness to be had from this essential oil. We are made up of trillions of cells – skin cells, heart cells, lung cells, cells that make up our joints, muscles and cartilage – we are all cells. So, when we feel some sort of discomfort in our body, say for example head and neck tension, then you can bet there is dis -Ease in the cells in that particular area of the body. Frank is the man, essential oil, for the job because of the anti-inflammatory properties and the ability to cross the cell membrane, whilst being completely natural.
Does the King of Oils have any more powerful properties? Oh my yes….
- Anticatarrhal – aiding in the removal of mucus from the respiratory system.
- Anticancer
- Antidepressant – an agent that helps to alleviate depression.
- Anti-infectious – a warrior that prevents and combats the spread of germs.
- Anti-septic – destroys and prevents the development of nasty microbes.
- Antitumor
- Immune stimulant
- Sedative – aids in calming and relaxing.
EVERYDAY USES FOR FRANKINCENSE.
The way I use Frankincense everyday to support my body against a feeling of dis-Ease is by placing 2 drops of Frankincense under my tongue. I haven’t convinced my four babes to do this yet. I admit, the taste is something you need to get use to. For the kids we have Frankincense in a small roller bottle (for easy application) and they all know that they can go and grab it and use it themselves when needed. They apply a small amount behind their ears, behind their neck and under their feet to receive those same anti-inflammatory and emotional health benefits topically.
There are so many other uses for this rescue oil. Here are a few more ideas.
AROMATICALLY.
Cupping technique. Place a drop in the palm of your hands then cup your hands over your face and inhale deeply. You might do this as a mood and mental health support and to support your immune system during air travel.
Place a few drops of Frank in a diffuser with Eucalyptus, Lemon and/or Melaleuca (Tea Tree) as a super support for the respiratory system. A handy blend as we welcome the cooler evenings of Autumn. You now have something that will support your family’s respiratory and immune system that will smell lovely and clean.
Yoga. Frankincense will centre and ground you from your toes right past your nose and up to your busy brain. I love using Frankincense with Peppermint before my yoga practice. I use the cupping technique mentioned above. I start with Peppermint to invigorate me and open my airways. Then I use my Frankincense to connect into all that is Mother Earth, Source and Me.
TOPICALLY.
1-2 drops of Frankincense in carrier oil and massage it over your temples and behind your ears to support your mood and mental health and soothe any head and neck tension.
Respiratory Support. Peppermint and Frankincense can be used with some carrier oil and massaged over the chest, back and under feet. I would use this through out the day every 2-3 hours whenever there is respiratory discomfort.
Skin Health. 1 drop of Frank with your favourite carrier oil around the eye area to reduce appearance of blemishes and rejuvenate skin. For the naughty middle of the day sun worshipers without adequate protection you can also use Frankincense as a skin care support for blemishes on other areas of your body. It can also soothe the discomfort experienced with skin ouchies. Check out my blog post about making up your own Wound Blend and After Sun Blend.
Emotions. Applying a drop or 2 of Frankincense to your temples and/or feet will help centre and balance your mood.
Chakras. Balance your crown chakra by placing a drop right on top of your head. Don’t worry, you won’t look like an oily mess as the essential oils are absorbed in your skin quickly.
Immune System Support. Feeling run down, hot and a little under the weather? Frankincense and Peppermint together can be cooling and can support your immune system. In fact it’s my go to for me and my babes if we’re ever hot and miserable, which to be honest does not happen all that often anymore.
Babies. Frankincense and Lavender together make a gentle combination for babies. With some Fractionated Coconut Oil it can be used to soothe skin including around the nappy area. This combo is also useful to calm and soothe at rest time and for the breastfeeding mumma for emotional and breast tissue support. Something completely natural for mum and bub. I wish I had this for my newborns and when I was breastfeeding my four babes.
INTERNALLY.
Although I recommend starting with the oils topically I do place 1-2 drops under my tongue as a daily overall support for my body and mind. In this way it supports cellular function and can help soothe head and neck tension.
A WORD ON QUALITY.
The quality of essential oils is very important for safety and effectiveness. Essential oils are not all created equal. Chemical constituents, distillation process, testing and purity are important factors in quality and ultimately effectiveness. Please check the labels of your essential oils Also be aware that there is no governing body for essential oils so you want to be sure of the brand that you are using. I trust and use doTERRA essential oils for my family. My suggestions only relate to using doTERRA essential oils. doTERRA has been a catalyst for change, better health and learning in our home.
Frankincense essential oil is one of the oils in our starter kits and is worth considering as a support for your journey toward vitality and wellness naturally.
